How to Cross-Post Instagram to Facebook Automatically
Cross-posting puts the same story, post, or Reel on Instagram and on your Facebook Page. This guide explains what you need, what to adapt, and how to publish to both platforms in one step.
What cross-posting is
To cross-post is to publish one piece of content to more than one platform. Here, the two platforms are Instagram and a Facebook Page.
Cross-posting saves time. You prepare the media once, and the same content reaches people who follow you on Facebook but not on Instagram.
Cross-posting is also a simple way to keep a Facebook Page active. A Page without new content can look abandoned to visitors. Cross-posting gives the Page new content every time you publish on Instagram.
Cross-posting does not join the two audiences. Instagram and Facebook count views, comments, and replies separately. Each platform keeps its own numbers.
What you need
Before you can cross-post, you need these items:
- An Instagram Business or Creator account.
- A Facebook Page for your business.
- A link between the Instagram account and the Facebook Page.
Meta manages the link between an Instagram account and a Facebook Page. You can make the link from the settings of the Facebook Page or from the Instagram app.
A personal Facebook profile is not a Page. Automatic cross-posting through the official API works with a Facebook Page only.
Which formats you can cross-post
In Storylink, you can cross-post all three main formats:
- Stories go to Instagram Stories and to Facebook Stories.
- Posts go to the Instagram feed and to the Facebook Page feed.
- Reels go to Instagram Reels and to Facebook Reels.
The limits are not the same on the two platforms. The largest difference is video length. In Storylink, a Reel for Instagram can be up to 15 minutes long. A Reel that also goes to Facebook can be up to 90 seconds long.
When to adapt content for Facebook
The same content often works on both platforms. But the audiences can differ in age, in location, and in what they expect from your business.
Consider these points before you cross-post:
- Web addresses in a Facebook post caption are clickable. Web addresses in an Instagram caption are not.
- Hashtags are common on Instagram. On Facebook, a long list of hashtags can look out of place.
- A mention of an Instagram account does not link to the same account on Facebook.
If a caption depends on Instagram features, publish a separate version for Facebook. Otherwise, one version for both platforms is usually enough.
Also compare the results on each platform after a few weeks. If a format gets little reach on Facebook, you can stop the cross-post for that format and keep it for the others.
Common problems and how to fix them
Most cross-post problems have one of two causes: the link between the two accounts, or a platform limit.
- The Instagram account has no linked Facebook Page. Link a Facebook Page to the Instagram account, then connect the account again in your scheduling tool.
- The video is too long for Facebook. Trim the video, or publish it to Instagram only.
- The Page access expired. Connect the Instagram account again to renew the access.
A problem on Facebook does not stop the Instagram publication. The Instagram version can be live while the Facebook version failed. Read the publish status for each platform.
How Storylink does it
In Storylink, cross-posting is a choice that you make for each story, post, or Reel. Storylink publishes once to Instagram and once to your linked Facebook Page, at the same scheduled time.
- Open the Storylink calendar and click a day.
- Select Story, Post, or Reel as the schedule type.
- Add your media and set the time.
- Under Publish to, select the Instagram option and the Facebook option.
- Click Schedule.
If the Instagram account has no linked Facebook Page, Storylink disables the Facebook options. It shows the message “Link a Facebook Page in settings to enable”.
After publication, the item detail shows the status for Instagram and for Facebook separately. If the Facebook cross-post fails, the Storylink calendar marks the item with a warning. You can click the warning to read the reason.
The story detail shows views, accounts reached, replies, and shares for Instagram and for Facebook. The Analytics page shows your follower totals on both platforms.
