Instagram Story Insights Explained: Views, Reach & More
Instagram gives each story a small set of numbers. This guide explains what each number means, why a number can be missing, and how to keep the numbers after the story expires.
Where story insights come from
Instagram counts insights for stories on professional accounts, which are Business and Creator accounts. A personal account does not get these numbers.
You can read story insights in the Instagram app. Scheduling and analytics tools read the same numbers through the official Instagram API. The API gives four main story metrics:
- Views
- Reach
- Replies
- Shares
Each metric applies to one story. In a sequence of slides, each slide is a separate story with its own numbers.
Views and reach
Views is the number of times people saw the story. One person who watches a story three times adds three views.
Reach is the number of different accounts that saw the story. One person who watches a story three times adds one to reach.
Because of this, views are usually equal to or higher than reach. A large difference between the two numbers tells you that some people watched the story more than once.
Reach is often the better number for comparison. It tells you how many people saw your story, and repeat views do not inflate it.
Why some numbers are missing
Sometimes a story has no numbers at all. A missing number is not the same as zero. These are the usual causes:
- Very few people watched the story. To protect the privacy of viewers, Instagram withholds story metrics when the audience is very small, for example fewer than five viewers.
- The story expired. The API gives story metrics only while the story is live.
- The numbers are not ready yet. Right after a story publishes, the metrics can take some time to appear.
- The account access expired. A tool can read insights only while it has valid access to your account.
If a small account sees missing numbers often, the first cause is the most likely one. The numbers appear when more people watch.
The 24-hour window
A story is live for 24 hours. The Instagram API gives story metrics only during that window. After the window ends, a tool can no longer ask Instagram for the numbers of that story.
This has a direct result. If nobody saves the numbers before the story expires, those numbers are not available to your tools later.
The numbers also grow during the 24 hours. A number that you read after one hour is usually lower than the final number. To compare stories in a fair way, compare numbers from the same point in each story’s life, for example the last reading before expiry.
How to read your numbers
Use these simple rules when you compare stories:
- Compare stories of the same kind, for example offer stories with offer stories.
- Compare reach against your follower count, not only against other stories.
- In a sequence, compare the reach of the first slide with the reach of the last slide. A large drop tells you that people left before the end.
- Compare many stories over some weeks. One story alone tells you very little.

How Storylink does it
Storylink collects the insights of each published story while the story is live. It reads every slide during the 24-hour window and saves the numbers. The numbers then stay available after the story expires.
Open a published story on the Storylink calendar to read its views, accounts reached, replies, and shares. If you also published the story to Facebook, the detail shows the Facebook numbers separately. Until the first numbers arrive, the detail shows “data not in yet”.
The Analytics page puts the numbers of all your stories together:
- Total views and total reach for the selected range.
- Your best story and a list of top stories.
- An engagement figure for each top story, based on replies, shares, re-watches, and views.
The Analytics page has ranges of 7, 30, and 90 days, and All time. The ranges that you can use depend on your plan. All time is on the Pro and Business plans. On Pro and Business, you can also export your results to Excel.
