How to Schedule Recurring Instagram Posts and Stories
Some content repeats on a regular rhythm, such as a weekly offer or a monthly reminder. A recurring schedule publishes that content again and again from one rule. This guide shows how to plan and manage one.
What a recurring schedule is
A recurring schedule is a rule that publishes the same kind of content at regular times. For example, the rule can say “every Tuesday at 19:00”.
Each time that the rule publishes is an occurrence. All the occurrences of one rule together make a series.
A series saves you from scheduling the same item many times by hand. You make one rule, and the tool fills your calendar from it.
When repeating content makes sense
Repeating content works well for information that your followers need again and again:
- A weekly offer or a regular sale day.
- Opening hours or a reminder before a weekly event.
- A regular feature, such as a tip of the week.
- A monthly announcement, such as a new menu or a new schedule.
Repeating the exact same image for months can make people stop paying attention. Refresh the media of a long series from time to time, and keep the rhythm the same.
Choose a repeat rule
A repeat rule has three parts: the unit, the interval, and the days.
- Daily. The series publishes every day, or every few days. For example, every 2 days.
- Weekly. The series publishes on the days of the week that you choose. For example, every Monday and Thursday.
- Monthly. The series publishes once a month on a fixed date, on a fixed weekday such as the first Monday, or on the first business day.
Choose the time with care, because every occurrence uses it. Use the time when your audience is most likely to see the content.
Decide when the series ends
Every series needs an end rule. There are three choices:
- Never. The series continues until you stop it.
- After a number of times. The series stops after a fixed count, for example 8 weeks of a weekly offer.
- On a date. The series stops on a date, for example the last day of a season.
Use a count or a date for a campaign with a known end. Use “Never” only for content that stays true for a long time, such as opening hours.
Edit one occurrence or the whole series
Plans change. A good recurring tool lets you edit at two levels.
- Edit one occurrence when only one date is different, for example a special offer on one day.
- Edit the series when the rule or the content changes for all future dates.
You can also pause a series for a short break, for example during a holiday closure. A paused series does not publish until you resume it. If you need only one gap, skip the next occurrence instead.
Holidays and daily limits
A repeat rule does not know about holidays. A weekly post about your opening hours can land on a day when your business does not open. Examine the holidays in the period of the series before you start it.
Instagram lets each account publish up to 50 posts in 24 hours. A busy account with several series can reach that limit on some days. Count the series that publish on the same day.
How Storylink does it
Storylink can repeat stories, posts, and Reels. You make the series in the same composer that you use for a single item.
- Open the Storylink calendar and click the day of the first occurrence.
- Select the schedule type, add your media, and set the time.
- Enable Repeat.
- Choose the interval and the unit: day, week, or month.
- For a weekly series, select the days of the week.
- Under Ends, select Never, After, or On date.
- Give the series a name, and click Schedule series.
Storylink keeps the next 90 days of each series on your calendar. Each occurrence shows a repeat mark. When you edit an occurrence, Storylink asks if the change is for this one only or for this and all future occurrences.
The Recurring schedules page lists your series. From there, you can pause, resume, skip the next occurrence, duplicate, end, or delete a series. The page of each series shows its average reach and average replies.
In the series settings, you can enable Shift off holidays. An occurrence that lands on a holiday then moves to the next business day. Storylink also warns you if a series would pass the Instagram daily limit. It skips those occurrences.
The Free plan includes one active series. Repeating stories cannot be promoted as ads.
